If Your Course Doesn’t Solve a Problem, You Don’t Have a Business—You Have a Hobby

John White, Jr.

There’s a hard truth many aspiring course creators don’t want to hear—but need to.

If your course doesn’t solve a real problem, you don’t have a business. You have a hobby.

And while there’s nothing wrong with having hobbies, mistaking a hobby for a business is the fastest way to waste your time, energy, and potential.

As a certified Entrepreneurship and Business coach and the founder of The WOWE Factor Academy, I’ve helped countless people in the gig economy—yoga instructors, musicians, life coaches, artists, fitness trainers, and more—turn their knowledge into real income.

But here’s the common trap I see far too often:

People build courses around what they want to teach, rather than what their audience needs to learn.

They think:
“This topic is exciting to me!”
“I’ve always wanted to teach this!”
“People just need to know about this!”

But none of those statements matter unless the course actually solves a problem someone is actively trying to fix.

🚫 Hobby Courses vs. Business Courses

Let’s break this down.

A hobby course is built on passion, creativity, and self-expression—but with no consideration for market demand.

A business course is built on value, transformation, and demand. It identifies a pain point and offers a solution.

Your online course should serve one purpose:
To move someone from a problem to a result.

That’s the difference between creating a fun project and creating a product that sells.

If no one is urgently searching for what you’re teaching… you don’t have a market.

If people don’t feel stuck, frustrated, confused, overwhelmed, or blocked in the area your course covers… they’re not going to pay to get unstuck.

If your course is “nice to have” instead of “I need this now”… you’re not solving a real problem.

And here’s the good news: once you solve a problem, you can charge real money for it—over and over again.

💡 Your Course is the Bridge

Think of your course as a bridge. On one side of the bridge is where your customer is now. They’re stuck, struggling, or frustrated. They’re Googling solutions. They’re watching YouTube tutorials at 2 AM. They’re piecing together advice and getting nowhere fast.

On the other side of the bridge is the result they want: confidence, clarity, strength, peace, income, transformation, or success.

Your course is what gets them across.

If you’re not building that bridge… you're just giving them scenery to look at while they stay stuck.

✅ Real Course Creators Solve Real Problems

Let’s look at a few examples from my students at The WOWE Factor Academy who nailed this:

  • A yoga instructor didn’t just create a generic yoga course. She created a 6-week mobility program for desk workers dealing with back pain.
  • A musician didn’t just teach music theory. He built a course on how to write, record, and produce your first song at home with no equipment.
  • A financial advisor didn’t just talk about budgeting. She built a course called “Debt-Free in 90 Days: A Step-by-Step Game Plan for Families.”

These people didn’t just teach what they liked—they solved what their audience hated.

That’s what makes people buy. That’s what makes your course a business.

🔍 How to Know If Your Course Solves a Real Problem

Before you even build a lesson, ask yourself:

  • What’s the before and after of this course?
Can you clearly describe how your student’s life, business, mindset, health, or income will change?
  • Is someone actively looking for this solution?
Are people already asking questions in forums, Facebook groups, or Google?
  • Would I pay for this if I had the same problem?
If your honest answer is “maybe,” go back to the drawing board.

📉 Why Hobby Courses Fail to Sell

The problem with passion-based hobby courses is that they feel personal—but they don’t connect to someone else’s need.

No matter how beautifully designed your course is…
No matter how many modules it includes…
No matter how much effort you put into the video production…

If your course doesn’t answer a “How do I fix this?” question, it won’t sell.

And even if it does sell, it won’t scale. Because people won’t talk about it. They won’t rave about the result. They won’t become loyal customers.

But if your course helps them lose weight, play guitar, get out of debt, land their first freelance client, grow their business—now you’re in business.

🎯 The Shift That Changes Everything

So how do you go from hobbyist to problem-solver?

You make this mindset shift:

“This isn’t about me. It’s about them.”

Your course isn’t about showing off what you know.
It’s about helping someone get where they want to go—faster, easier, and with fewer mistakes.

When you start there, you’ll never run out of course ideas. Because people always have problems they want solved.

That’s how you put the WOWE Factor in your business!
